Food in Tokyo

Below is a list of some of our favorite places to eat in Tokyo. Formal restaurants, cafés, markets, bakeries, casual dining. In no particular order:

Upscale dining:

Sushi Ya
〒104-0061 Tokyo, Chuo City, Ginza, 6 Chome−4−16, Hanatsubaki Bldg, 2階
Order: Omakase, so chef decides
Remarkable omakase experience in an 8 seat restaurant. Highly recommended. Reservations only. For dinner, expect to pay upwards of 180€/person.

Matsukan Azabujuban
3 Chome-4-12 Azabujuban, Minato City, Tokyo 106-0045
Order: Omakase
Very fun and pleasant staff. A couple of highlights were the toro niguiri and king crab. Set menu is around 160€/person, but you can also order a la carte.

Sekishin Tei
〒102-0094 Tokyo, Chiyoda City, Kioicho, 4−1
Order: Set menu
Old school Teppanyaki fine dining inside the Hotel New Otani. You’ll have to cross a traditional Japansese garden to get to the restaurant. A single chef will prepare all of your dishes in front of you. Excellent meat. After the hot dishes, there is a refreshing dessert in a separate room across the garden.

Casual dining:

Tonkatsu Maisen
4 Chome-8-5 Jingumae, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0001
Order: Pork loin meal
Very fast service. The meals include a breaded pork filet, miso soup, cabbage and rice. Sauces are self serve at your table. A comforting meal.

Harajuku Gyozaro
6 Chome-2-4 Jingumae, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0001
Order: pan fried and steamed dumplings
Long lines during peak lunch but worth the wait. Very fast, very casual. Cash only.

Mitsukoshi Ginza
4 Chome-6-16 Ginza, Chuo City, Tokyo 104-8212
Order: Located in the basement floor of a department store. This is an indoor food market, so stroll around until you find everything you please. You can take your food to-go, or eat it on the 10th floor’s dining area. My favorites were chicken teriyaki skewers, teriyaki meatballs, roast beef niguiri, papaya and persimmon salad, gyozas...The dessert area is ample as well. Make sure you check out Johan, a self serve bakery located in the far left corner of the market.

Seirinkan
2 Chome-6-4 Kamimeguro, Meguro City, Tokyo 153-0051
Order: Any pizza (only two kinds), prosciutto with melon, pasta napolitana.
Beatles-themed pizzería in a narrow three story building. This is the best pizza I have ever had.

Bakeries and coffee:

Sunnyhills
3 Chome-10-20 Minamiaoyama, Minato City, Tokyo 107-0062
Order: You must purchase one of the gift items at the counter to be let upstairs where you will be served a complimentary pineapple cake. The café was made by architect Kengo Kuma.

Rose Bakery
〒104-0061 Tokyo, Chuo City, Ginza, 6 Chome−9−5
Order: Oat and date slice, carrot cake
Exceptional bakery with lunch dishes inside Dover Street Market in Ginza.

Confectionary Ginza West
7 Chome-3-6 Ginza, Chuo City, Tokyo 104-0061
Order: tea and cookies, pancakes, french toast
Iconic neighborhood café serving western and traditional dishes. Open late (10pm)!

Princi Daikanyama T-Site
〒150-0033 Tokyo, Shibuya City, Sarugakucho, 16−15
Order: olive baguette with mortadella, rhubarb croissant, café latte
Italian style bakery serving Starbucks Reserve coffee. Or Starbucks Reserve serving italian pastries. It wasn’t clear, but if you’re spending a long day at Tsutaya Books in the Daikanyama T-Site (which you should), then grab a second breakfast here.

Onibus Coffee
2 Chome-14-1 Kamimeguro, Meguro City, Tokyo 153-0051
Order: café latte
Quaint walk-up coffee shop in the Nakameguro neighborhood. Order coffee here to-go and take it with you on a walk to Jantiques, second hand vintage store recommended by our friend William from Fergusalice.
