Upscale dining:

Small, relaxed restaurant in a peaceful neighborhood. Delicate dishes, organic vegetables, friendly staff.

Tempura Endo Yasaka

Remarkable tempura dining. Dishes delicately fried in front of you. Rice bowl and refreshing dessert to end. 

Casual dining:

Nishiki Market
Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, 604-8055, Japan 
Order: Tempura, skewers, Kyoto style bread
Open market with large variety of stalls, stands and small restaurant. Savory and sweet. It’s required to eat what you order while standing still in front of your vendor to avoid traffic jams when eating and walking. 

Katsukura Tonkatsu Sanjo

Order: Pork loin meal set
Narrow alley leading up to this informal tonkatsu restaurant. Different sauces and dressings at each table and your own mortar and pestle to grind sesame seeds into your sauce. Try timing your meal to be able to stop at the nearby Kyukyodo aftewards. It’s an elegant paper goods shop worth visiting. 

Men-ya Yukou
588 Banocho, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, 604-8172
Order: Kyoto style broth ramen with pork, Japanese gyozas
Teeny restaurant specializing in pork loin ramen. The noodles are perfect, the pork succulent.  The queue moves fast.

Bakeries, coffee shops:

Blue Bottle Coffee

Order: Lemon waffle, scone with ricotta and jam, egg and bacon platters, café au lait
A renovated traditional Kyoto home turned to coffee shop. Have breakfast here then take a second coffee to go to the Philosopher’s Path nearby.
Arabica Coffee

Order: latté
There are a few locations in the center of Kyoto, but if you are already going to make it out to the Arishyama Bamboo Grove, visit this location nearby that overlooks the Katsura river.
Belamer
66 Masuyacho, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, 604-8111
Order: Mont blanc square, butter biscuit chocolate bar
Not a bakery or coffee shop, but a chocolate store offering individual truffles, chocolate bars and delicate candies. 

Petit France

Order: Pain suisse, kyoto style bread
Stop by this self-serve bakery after visting the Obai-in temple complex and walk all the way down the nearby Omi-ya Dori Street. You will eventually reach Marguerite, a bakery stand on your right-hand side. 
Marguerite

Order: Banana pound cake, chocolate biscuit
A roadside, family run bakery stand serving 2-3 different pastries.
